San Diego, California, certainly takes its students seriously. It boasts one of the best qualified work forces in the United States, with over a third of over-25s having at least a bachelor’s degree. And the city values its students and likes to treat them well, as the recent opening of a new $64 million student center at the UC San Diego shows. The Price Center East, which opened its doors to students earlier this month, offers recreational facilities such as restaurants, a grocery store and a performance lounge. The 27,000 students at UC San Diego will be able to stroll around bookstores, a food court, computer rooms and a ballroom. Students had complained that there were not enough social facilities for them on campus, so this development aims to offer students more facilities so that a greater sense of community can be fostered.

The new center is not the only exciting building project in San Diego, California at the moment. Funding has just been approved for an iconic new pedestrian bridge in Downtown San Diego. The bridge will reach from Petco Park to the Port of San Diego, giving access to the recently built public parking garage, and it will span Harbour Drive. The bridge will cost $26.8 million, and will bring new life into the Downtown area with a high-impact modern addition to the skyline.

With its modern image and investment in education, San Diego certainly is a great location for young people. San Diego also boasts great business resources, unsurprising considering its prime location on the Pacific coast and near the Mexican border. The workforce is generally qualified, professional and young, with a median age of only 32. And there is good news for San Diego’s youthful population in the real estate sector. Real estate forecasters have recently advised that now is a great time for first time buyers to test the waters of the housing market. With many house prices falling, and great foreclosure deals available, overall affordability in the real estate market is predicted to rise in 2008, so it is the perfect time for young and first time buyers to find a bargain and get a foot on the property ladder.

And where better to do that than in San Diego, California. Did you know that in a list compiled by Relocate-America of the best places to live in the United States in 2008, San Diego features in the top 100? Cities and towns from across the country are nominated for the list by their residents, and then each location is compared on the basis local statistics in areas such as education, crime, economy and employment. Feedback is also received from the residents of communities across America on what they like and dislike about their communities. San Diego came out near the top of the list, as it was found to have attractive employment opportunities, great night life and recreational facilities, a range of housing for all budgets and a real sense of neighborhood and community.
