Having your home on the market is a big deal for those living in the house. While you must have already had your house scrubbed clean, painted and renovated to attract the prospective buyers, taking a few steps to protect your own privacy becomes a must too. Just as soon as you have put your house on the market, there will be a swarm of buyers, agents and Realtors visiting your house for a look. While you may still require some of your items in place, there are certain things that you need to consider. Firstly, most buyers will be opening the drawers, wardrobes, cabinets etc in order to check for the space and the style. Secondly, any personal items, unknowingly seen by these buyers, might create an inoffensive bias against you. Hence, mentioned below are certain steps that will ensure that you bag the deal, while your privacy remains intact to the fullest.

First and foremost, hide all the mail you get. Do not leave your mail in a place that is likely to be accessed by the buyer. Any embarrassing mails such as bank notice, personal letters, cards, photographs, magazines etc might draw unwanted attention, while revealing your personal issues to the buyers. Some of the buyers might try taking udue advantage, while others may simply form a bias against the buying. Hence, be extremely careful of concealing your mail in the right places.

Secondly, while many think otherwise, it is always better to take down your personal mementos from the walls, such as photographs, diplomas etc. while adding these onto a home does give house an appealing, homely touch, they might act against you at times. In case there is a copy of any recent diplomas or wedding photographs attached, buyers might tend to form a bias in regards to your age, finances or religion. Therefore, keeping these stashed somewhere safe for your future home will be a better thing to do.

Thirdly, while you do take special care of the outer appearance, do not miss the interior of closets, drawers and wardrobes. Prospective buyers tend to open such cases in order to get the complete idea of the property. Leaving aside any of your personal or non-personal items that may again bring forth the danger of a bias by the buyers. Therefore, pack away all that you think is unnecessary and clean up the closets, wardrobes and drawers to spotless. Do not leave a single item in these, while you can create and place alternative items to give a wider look to the house. Not only does clean and empty look give the impression of discipline, it will also help keep your own privacy intact.

Lastly, while your mail and personal items are happily hidden away from the world, there is one thing that many miss – the answering machines. These have a tendency to start beeping at the most crucial times and therefore, it will be wise on your part to either turn these off altogether at the time of buyers visiting or turn them mute. This will help safeguard you from getting embarrassed by voice mails playing in front of the prospective buyer.

Basically, safeguarding your privacy will only help you safeguard your own interest, while not giving away any of the difficulties or problems you might be facing and hence, negotiating the deal on your terms.
