Buying a house in San Diego? Read on………..
New verses Old
It would be safe to say that when an electrical appliance in the house breaks down, it is not only aggravating but costly. One of the first things that many of us do when something breaks is to have a quick look-over to see whether it is something obvious such as a lead which has fallen out or a blown fuse. If there is a more sinister problem with the appliance however, we often wonder whether it would be worth having it looked at and fixed, or whether it would be better to bite the bullet and buy a new one.
The Cost Factor
The cost of an electrical appliance is always one of the issues when it comes to the choice between repairing and buying new. If the item is cheap, then buying a new one is often the best solution. If your toaster breaks one morning, you will be able to pick one up for next to nothing, and will save you any hassle of trying to fix it. If however your washing machine or refrigerator stops functioning, you may want to look at any underlying reasons and figure out what the repair costs would be.
Getting Information
Getting in touch with the manufacturer is one of the first things that you can do when something breaks. If it is a common problem, they may be able to help you straight away or at least offer you some advice. You will need all the details beforehand as the manufacturer will want to know the serial numbers and model.
Being forearmed is forewarned, so any information that you have about the machine or appliance will be useful. The internet is a useful tool, and you can find out whether other people have had the same problem as you. You may also want to research the life expectancy of the appliance and find out whether yours has died a death too early. If on the other hand, you find out that yours has been working for well beyond the expected life term, then it may be worth buying a new one.
You may also find out that your washing machine is a very old model and that it has become obsolete since you bought it. If this is the case, you may find that it is better to buy a new one instead. Spare parts can be very difficult to obtain for older models, and the process can be very time-consuming.
Getting It Repaired
Some jobs are easy and can be done at home on your own. Other jobs may require a qualified repairman, so you will want to figure all costs into the equation. Service technicians will typically charge you a call out fee to have a look at the faulty appliance which will later be taken off the actual repair bill. You can then find out exactly what is wrong with it, and whether it is worth getting repaired. You will be able to get a quote which you can then compare with the cost of buying new. If it is a simple job, then the internet may be your best resource. Several do-it-yourself websites have easy to follow instructions on minor repair jobs, so you may be able to save money this way.
