In the San Diego and Bay Area, one person who lives in Contra Costa County was suddenly identified with a weird type of infection, and he was believed to be coming from out of state when the tomatoes were consumed. A second case was later confirmed by The California Department of Public Health this Monday. A four year old child who was coming back from Texas was said to have been infected with the same infection. The case was confirmed by San Diego County officials.

United States Food and Drug Administration was issuing warnings to consumers that these food poisonings were linked with the intake of a certain type of red plum or red Roma and red tomatoes also products which contain the previous as a part of them could also be causing this food poisoning. The FDA has not been able to identify the contaminated source as of yet but the FDA sad that the epidemic has been successful to effect almost 150 people but no one was reported deceased as of yet.

Most of the departmental stores and grocery shops are removing the products which are listed in the FDA report. Restaurants are also checking with their suppliers to identifying the source of this infection. Most of the restaurants have stopped serving tomatoes just to be on the safe side. This particular sickness is said to be caused by salmonella virus which also goes by the common name of “saintpaul”. This virus, if ingested, will be the cause of fever, diarrhea, nauseating feeling and vomiting and various degrees of abdominal pain. In young children it is sometimes the cause of serious infections and for the elderly it causes fatal food poisonings, especially in people with weak immune systems. And according to the FDA dehydration is a big issue.

It is highly recommended by the FDA that if people do get food poisoning, they should contact a professional health care center immediately for assistance, as this case of food poisoning is quite acute. These symptoms are expected to be persistent for at least three to four days but in case of the elderly and the children, the time limit maybe more.

Weather cooking can actually kill the germs in the tomatoes was actually confirmed by the FDA. But the temperature at which the cooking should be done is a key issue and the department has given a simple suggestion that prohibiting from eating the identified products would be really wise. Washing on the other hand is not an advised idea because washing cannot always remove all the bacteria from the food.

The FDA spokesman Kimberly Rawlings have said that the agency is conducting a trace back investigation and sooner they identify the source the easier it would be for the public to stay away from the infectious cases. What the FDA was particular about mentioning was that tomatoes grown in California was not associated in any way this outbreak of infection. The FDA also stated that it is safe to eat cherry tomatoes, certain varieties of grape tomatoes, and tomatoes which are sold with the vine attached, especially tomatoes grown at home are safe.
